The Myth of Routine Failure

I see the same pattern on process plants repeatedly.

A joint that is always on the maintenance list. A shutdown that arrives every six months like clockwork. A reorder raised automatically for the exact same material. Nobody questions it because it has always been done that way.

But you are not scheduling maintenance. You are scheduling a recurring failure.

Every time that line stops, you lose production hours and risk an unplanned shutdown.

Elastomers Do Not Fail on a Timetable

Elastomers do not simply give up on a rigid timetable without a root cause. If an FKM or EPDM ring is hardening, cracking, or swelling twice a year, it is not a consumable wearing out.

It is failing because it is the wrong material entirely.

It is merely surviving until it perishes under chemical or thermal attack, rather than actually sealing.

Stop Calling It Maintenance

We need to stop treating elastomer degradation as a routine maintenance schedule. A seal replacement every six months is a specification decision nobody has bothered to revisit.
